If you are looking to buy a domain for a website or secure node you can use bitcoin or other cryptocurrencies for privacy and convenience. I am working on setting up a new Zencash secure node and I wanted to see if I could do the whole process with Bitcoin. For this tutorial I am using the registrar Epik, they offer great prices, free privacy and they accept Bitcoin.
Buy domains with Bitcoin
The first step is to head over to Epik and register for an account. The first page is just simple username password, the second one does need address information and also a phone number, this information doesn’t seem to be validated so if you are concerned about privacy, go ahead and fill in some random information.
Next, you need to search for the name you want to register.
For my use of running a Zencash secure node, the domain doesn’t really matter so I just picked the cheapest TLD which happened to be a .XYZ at $1.99 follow the steps and select credit card, paypal or live the dream and use bitcoin.
For Bitcoin payment processing Epik is using Coinbase which is a pretty easy checkout, you can send the coin directly or use your Coinbase wallet.
Note It’s important to pay attention when doing this. I just scanned the QR code and pressed send but I neglected to make the payment net of fees. Looks like I have to wait and see what happens next. I am going to pray to the crypto gods that Coinbase has an easy way to deal with short payments.
Update! Well, it looks like my sacrifices to Satoshi worked and Coinbase processed my transaction without having to add more in fees. I am not sure if this how it is supposed to work but It worked for me!
There you have it, how to buy a domain with Bitcoin from start to finish in under 30 mins!
Domain Registrars that accept Bitcoin
While I waited for my Coinbase mistake to sort itself out I made a list of other registrars that accept bitcoin payments. Please comment below if you know of others and I will add it to the list.
